Who Am I?

Who Am I?

Phil Standen

As a kid I loved all sport and was a county level swimmer. I played many sports into my teenage years but Life doesn’t always pan out like we think it should. I lost both my parents whilst still in my teens, I turned away from sport, subconsciously deciding that the best way to cope was to binge on food and drink. My weight increased dramatically and I lost all my fitness.

Age 22 and weighing 17.5 stone I realised I was heading down a route I didn’t want to take. I had to face up to what had happened and the person I had become, starting by tackling my eating habits and lack of fitness. Trust me when I say I know how hard it is, I really do. I couldn’t even run 100m without fear of collapsing.

Fast forward 14 years and I’m now a healthy 12.5 stone, I regularly compete in Full and Half Distance Ironman’s as well as shorter distances. I will never forget completing my first Ironman, crossing the finish line it is an incredibly emotional experience, comprising of every single part of the journey that led me there. I was lucky enough to qualify to represent GB at the world championships in New Zealand and Canada 2017.

About me

So Why Me?

I believe that a coach isn’t just someone who writes a training plan for you but someone whom you should be able to trust and communicate with, regardless of the issue. There may be some testing times in your journey but a good coach will ride them with you.

I have been competing in triathlon for 9 years and I have come up against every challenge I can think of. I have made all the mistakes in the book from overtraining, over hydrating, under hydrating, insufficient nutrition, competing with an injury, comeback from said injury, bad race pacing……… you name it I have done it.
